Virulence Study of Striga hermonthica Populations from Tigray Region (Northern Ethiopia)
نویسندگان
چکیده
Striga hermonthica is a severe problem in the cereal growing regions of Northern Ethiopia. Nineteen Striga population samples were evaluated for their virulence against two resistant sorghum varieties currently being promoted for use in the area using an in vitro system. Nine out of the 19 populations tested were able to attack the resistant sorghum varieties (SRN 39 and P-9401). Most of the highly virulent populations came from the southeastern part of the region where there is a long history of crop culture and, thus, selection pressure on both the host and the parasite. The virulence study revealed that there are highly virulent populations in the region. Therefore, appropriate precautionary measures have to be taken on the promotion and distribution of improved varieties.

Study on mange mite of camel in Raya-Azebo district, northern Ethiopia
A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence and species of camel mange mite infestation in Raya-Azebo district, Northern part of Ethiopia. Accordingly, Three hundred and eighty-four camels were examined and mange mite infestation was detected on 64 of camels. Only Sarcoptes scabiei var. cameli was identified as the only mite species in all skin...
متن کاملGenetic variation and host–parasite specificity of Striga resistance and tolerance in rice: the need for predictive breeding
The parasitic weeds Striga asiatica and Striga hermonthica cause devastating yield losses to upland rice in Africa. Little is known about genetic variation in host resistance and tolerance across rice genotypes, in relation to virulence differences across Striga species and ecotypes. Diverse rice genotypes were phenotyped for the above traits in S. asiatica- (Tanzania) and S. hermonthica-infest...

Striga hermonthica is a widely spread root parasitic weed on cereals in Sub Saharan Africa including Sudan. The most important hosts comprise sorghum, millet and sugar cane. Host specificity and existence of two distinct strains on sorghum and millet were previously reported. Reports on a third strain specific to maize are controversial. The present study was undertaken to investigate anatomica...

Parasitism by Striga hermonthica (Del) Benth is a severe constraint in maizeproduction in sub-Saharan Africa. Varying levels of tolerance to Striga attack havebeen identified and exploited in breeding programs of several crops. However, thelevel and stability of the tolerance is generally unacceptable in field-practice. Onlylimited exploration has been undertaken among the farmers’ landraces to...
